Via dei Brentatori
Posted on 17 April 2024
The ancient Via dei Brentatori was a road used to transport wine from the hills of Zola Predosa to those of Monteveglio, traveled by the "brentatori".
These took their name from the "brenta", a type of wooden container suitable for being carried on the back. The art of the brentatori was a real profession, organized in a special corporation, whose tasks were not only the transport of the wine but also the control of the quality of this product.
Today the route has been reborn, becoming a 44 km trek that enhances and rediscovers the cultural and naturalistic emergencies of the hills between Bologna and Modena: the route in fact passes through the municipalities of Bologna, Casalecchio di Reno, Zola Predosa, Monte San Pietro and Valsamoggia. The Via dei Brentatori is divided into three stages, the first from Piazza Maggiore (Bologna) to Zola Predosa, the second from Zola to Monteveglio and finally from Monteveglio to Bazzano, with the final arrival point at the Rocca dei Bentivoglio.
The points of interest crossed by the route are many: the Chiusa di Casalecchio and the Talon Park, the hermitage of Tizzano, the villages of San Lorenzo in Collina and Oliveto, the Matildic abbey of Monteveglio and finally the Rocca di Bazzano.
