The educational-experimental chestnut grove, located in the municipality of Alto Reno Terme, was acquired in 2003 by the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio in Bologna as part of the Appennino Project for the promotion of chestnut cultivation through experimental projects and as a venue for educational and outreach activities.
Since 2003, clear-cutting and subsequent conversion operations have been carried out on experimental plots, with grafting of 14 fruit-bearing varieties and 4 varieties for timber use. Furthermore, within the intervention area, chestnut trees with Matildic roots were preserved, and in the mixed forest areas, the project aimed at an aesthetic and naturalistic conversion, with educational, promotional, and tourism purposes. Thanks to constant maintenance, the chestnut grove has retained all its unique qualities for the research, outreach, and entertainment for which it was designed.
Many activities are held in the chestnut grove: guided tours, chestnut harvesting, workshops, and even events.
In 2004, the Beltaine brewery was founded in collaboration with the chestnut grove, producing various chestnut-based beers.
