The church was built between 1802 and 1831 to house the image of the Blessed Virgin with the Child that had previously been inside a cave carved into the cliff. In 1945, a terrible bombing destroyed both the building, except for the two bell towers, and the 15th-century holy image.
Reconstruction of the present church ended in 1951, the year in which the painter Giovanni Franchi donated to the shrine an oil-on-wood painting reproducing the ancient effigy that was lost during the war.
Of particular interest inside is an 18th-century painting of the "Madonna Enthroned with Children, Angels and Saints," probably made by the French painters, and a beautiful painting by the Carracci depicting the Madonna del Carmine with saints Pietro, Paolo, Giovanni Evangelista and Francesco.
