The XII-XIV century architectural complex used to have defensive and administrative functions; it also includes the tower of Guanella and has been recently restored. This ancient building was unfortunately badly damaged during World War II, but further renovation prevented its collapse.
The tower has very interesting features, such as doors and windows (some of which currently blocked by bricks) and a coat of arms with two hands that hold each other. The tower also included a palace with battlements and with a prison; it is possible that in the Middle Ages this building might have housed the justice palace during the reign of Matilde of Canossa.
