Gaggio Montano
Rocca Pitigliana is an ancient village which belongs to the municipality of Gaggio Montano.
The village had a parish church in 969 which was mentioned in a document related to the borders of the territories of the bishops of Modena and Bologna. The medieval documents about Rocca Pitigliana attest that this was a very dynamic community, actively involved in wars and in commerce with the surrounding villages.
Some historians suggested that probably there was a castle on the site of the church and its tower.
The only traces of the castle are some galleries carved in the rocks, which probably lead inside the fortress.
The church is dedicated to San Michele Arcangelo and nearby lies the XIII century tower of Montefrasco, which has been recently restored.
