At 912 meters high and with a characteristic "camelback" shape, from which it also takes its name (Montòvolo, in fact, stands for "Oval Mountain"), the summit is home to the sanctuary and crypt, which dates back about nine centuries, the oratory dedicated to Santa Caterina, and the so-called "leap", an overhang several hundred meters high from which one overlooks the entire valley below on the side of the Reno River.
The entire area is located within the Provincial Park of Montovolo-Monte Vigese, established due to the geological and historical-cultural importance of the site. The Park also includes a WWF oasis, an area that protects the biodiversity of the environment. The extensive patches of mixed forest also include many chestnut trees, two of which have a monumental circumference of almost 8 meters, with an estimated age of about 400 years. These centuries-old trees can be admired along the path leading to the Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Consolazione.
