Alto Reno Terme
Singular building with an octagonal plan, located on the Porrettana road in the direction to Pistoia.
The cult related to the devotion of the image of the Madonna has very ancient roots, and is still very much felt by the citizens of Porrettana.
The cult linked to the devotion of the sacred image of the Madonna is traced back by some to 1249. The first construction of the future shrine consisted of a Majesty whose back wall consisted of the rock on which the Madonna was painted. Between 1578 and 1585 the original building was transformed into a small oratory.
In 1613 began the tradition, which continues to this day, of transporting the image of the Virgin Mary during the period of the rogations to the parish of Porretta, and then bringing it back to the shrine on Ascension Day, a tradition derived from the similar tradition of the Madonna di San Luca in Bologna.
The complete reconstruction of the temple began in 1855, but it was long and difficult because of the rock face that occupied the site where the new shrine now stands. Inside the church are some interesting works by Bolognese painters, such as Samoggia and Guadassoni, and many votive offerings testifying to the many miraculous events attributed over the years to the Madonna del Ponte.
On July 29, 1956, the "Basketball Player's Shrine" was consecrated inside the sanctuary, while in 2021, the Madonna del Ponte officially became the patroness of Italian basketball
