About a kilometer from the center of Castel D'Aiano, the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Brasa, built entirely with tufa from the Labante Caves, is worth a visit.
The Sanctuary, erected between 1719 and 1734, stands on the site where, according to popular tradition, an image of the Madonna miraculously reappeared on an old chestnut tree after being removed by the owner of the farm. The original building, built in the first half of the 18th century and later enlarged, was unfortunately completely destroyed during World War II.
The history of the shrine is steeped in faith and a deep connection with the local community. The present shrine was rebuilt in 1960 to a design by architect Adriano Marabini, who wanted to represent a new interpretation of the original structure. The venerated image, which was originally called Madonna del Fuoco or della Brasa, has undergone, over the centuries, alternating vicissitudes. The shrine of the Madonna di Brasa is the destination of numerous pilgrimages. A Way of the Cross starts from the village and leads through a path in the woods to the shrine.
