According to some studies that are still in progress, the Via Flaminia Minor was built in 187 B.C. at the behest of consul Gaius Flaminius in order to connect the areas north of the Apennines with those to the south.
Today the route of this ancient connecting road (intended mainly for the movement of military troops) has been recovered and re-traced so that it can be walked as a trek. The new route mainly follows CAI Trail 801, starting from the ruins of the ancient city of Claterna at Ozzano in Emilia and ending in Tuscany at the Raticosa Pass. The median stop is Villa di Cassano, near Monterenzio, which ideally divides the gully landscapes of the Parco dei Gessi e Calanchi dell'Abbadessa from the forests of the Apennine ridges. The trek can be covered totally in two days of walking, but it can also be enjoyed through loop trails that include part of the Flaminia Minor.
