In the square, which serves as a symbol for the ancient village, stand the ruins of the Casio Tower, broken vertically in half due to damage caused by the 1846 earthquake. This tower was erected in 1219 as part of the fortification of the village, which originally included a castle that collapsed during the 1470 earthquake. The entrance to the castle was located about 15 meters high and was accessed by a wooden walkway. Made of sandstone by Comacini masters, the tower had an original height of about 30 meters (after restoration and lowering by 5 meters) and was decorated with battlements and covered by a roof.
The wall surrounding the village was built by the town of Bologna, led by Gislimerio da Casio, as a boundary line after a peaceful agreement with the town of Pistoia.
