The place name of the village means 'punched mountain' and is referred to the canal that the senate of Bologna built here in 1333; the canal was used to transport timber directly to Bologna.
The area is part of the valley of the Dardagna and is characterized by the typical architectural elements, such as sandstone roofs, buildings decorated with sculptures and rounded chimneypots.
Poggiolforato hosts an Ethnographic museum of the mountains (Museo Etnografico della Cultura Montanara), with a display of about 2,000 exhibits divided into the five main sections of the collection (chestnuts, arts and crafts, sheep farming, religion, weaving). Nearby the museum can also be visited the so called 'Catinelle' house, with its original XIX century furniture and upholstery. From the fountain at the centre of the village there is a pathway which leads to the beautifully preserved mill 'Mulino del Capo'.
