Stagno is a small village within the municipality of Camugnano (6km). It is a small XV century village gathered around the church; in the past, in Stagno there was a powerful castle.
The castle of Stagno was contended in fierce fights between Pistoia and Bologna; the building was surrounded by large walls and there was only a doorway, which was protected by a tower. Inside the walls there was a cistern for the collection of rain and some small buildings. Until 1972 the castle could be reached only on foot. Stagno still preserves its historical architectural features, such as sandstone roofs, doorways and windows, arcades and inscriptions on stones, which lead the visitors on a journey through the past.
The church of Stagno is dedicated to San Michele Arcangelo and was built in 1570 as an oratory; it then became a parish in 1840. It has two very characteristic staircases which leads to two different entrances to the building, one for men and one for women.
