The Civic Archaeological Museum in Bazzano was founded in 1873 thanks to the activities of the "Società per Scavi Archeologici a Scopo Scientifico," composed of citizens from Bazzano and led by the Modenese archaeologist Arsenio Crespellani, after whom the museum is named. Its original collection, consisting of materials donated by the "Society," has grown over time thanks to continuous discoveries in the area, curated by the Soprintendenza per i Beni Archeologici dell'Emilia-Romagna.
The Museum currently holds a collection of artifacts from the Samoggia, Lavino and Reno valleys. This rich exhibition covers a vast time span spanning from the Mesolithic period to the Renaissance and is in the five rooms on the second floor of the Rocca dei Bentivoglio.
The theme of the first hall is "Prehistory" with lithic artifacts on display inside, documenting a sporadic presence of man in these areas until the Paleolithic, more stable from the Neolithic and during the early Metal Age. Instead, the second and third rooms are devoted to The Roman Age, testifying to the presence of settlement during the Early and Middle Imperial Age. The fourth room called the "Cheetah Room" holds the Modern History section, with documents and objects of all kinds, relics referable to the Greek-Turkish War of 1897 and the Italian-Turkish War of 1911, but especially the First and Second World Wars and the colonial wars. The main collection consists almost exclusively of objects of military use, mostly referring to the period of the Risorgimento. It consists of rifles, headgear, uniforms and paraphernalia.
