A true open-air geological museum, the Contrafforte Pliocenico is characterized by the presence of fossils and shells that testify to the fact that there was a sea in these places during the Pliocene (5-2 million years ago). A shallow sea with a tropical climate, composed of wide bays where rivers that descended from mountain ranges flowed into the sea (where the Po Valley is now).
About twenty kilometers from Bologna, a geo-site of regional importance, the Nature Reserve of the same name; which, in addition to distinguishing geological aspects, offers significant botanical interest due to the presence of Mediterranean species that find a favorable habitat thanks to the microclimate created by the imposing cliffs. As regards wildlife, the reserve also boasts a rich fauna, with particular emphasis on some rare species of birds, reptiles and amphibians. The presence of rocky ravines and other microhabitats that are difficult to access enhances the biodiversity of this area.
