The imposing Manservisi castle, overlooking the valley from the picturesque town of Castelluccio in the municipality of Alto Reno Terme, is an architectural jewel restored in the 1800s by Alessandro Manservisi. This imposing building, enhanced by neo-gothic elements such as pointed arches, towers and wrought-iron details, offers a magnificent and fascinating sight.
The castle, owned by the Manservisi family until 1912, is a site rich in history and culture. The interior houses the striking "Tapestry Room," which displays works restored by Bolognese painter Giacomo Lolli. These paintings, which reproduce the visual effect of a tapestry, narrate scenes from the daily life of the family of the same name, depicted in a Renaissance style. Once a residence villa and then a school colony, a hotel and restaurant, Manservisi Castle lived several lives before becoming, for the past decade or so, a vibrant cultural, exhibition and tourism center run by an association.
Director Pupi Avati chose this fascinating location as the set for his 1983 film "Una gita scolastica (A School Trip)", telling of an imaginary trip by a class from Bologna's Galvani High School in 1914. Part of the building is now dedicated to the LabOrantes Museum.
During the summer months, Manservisi Castle hosts a variety of cultural events, including photography and painting exhibitions, craft shows, theater performances, concerts, lectures and book presentations, many of which are accessible to the public free of charge. In addition, the castle offers the possibility of being the picturesque venue for weddings, conferences, events and parties.
