The Palace of the Capitani della Montagna (Mountain Captains) is located on the main square in the center of Vergato and houses the town hall.
The palace is distinguished by its splendid facade decorated with the coats of arms of the Captains, representing the symbol of the dominion of the disputed Apennine territories. Among these can also be seen what is still the coat of arms of the municipality today, depicting a wild boar in a swamp surrounded by two oak branches tied by a ribbon.
Originally a house dating from the 15th century, it was transformed in 1483 to become the headquarters of the Capitanato della Montagna. The present appearance of the palace is the result of reconstruction work carried out about the mid-20th century, following the design of Tito Azzolini and Alfonso Rubbiani.
In 1998, the Palace of the Capitani della Montagna was further enriched by the creation of four stained glass windows, created by renowned artist Luigi Ontani. These stained glass windows now adorn the Hall of the Municipal Council, creating a remarkable visual effect and a play of light and color.
