Valsamoggia
At the summit of Monteveglio hill stands the Abbey of Monteveglio, built between the 12th and 13th centuries, next to which the ancient village developed. The construction was commissioned by Matilde di Canossa following her victory over Emperor Henry IV. Both were protected by a castle with a large defensive wall, of which only the entrance gate adorned with a 14th-century tower remains.
The church was built between the XII and the XIII century on the ruins of an older religious building: the crypt bears witness to this with its pre-Romanic capitals, pre-dating the XI century. The monastery once belonged to the Laterans; it has a XV century double cloister and the remains of an older one, probably XII century, which has a XV century set of arches on top.
