Lizzano In Belvedere
Situated between the Silla and Dardagna streams at the foot of Monte Pizzo, nestled in wonderful chestnut, pine, fir and beech forests, Vidiciatico is a location rich in tourist resources, with Lizzano an ideal starting point for ski slopes and excursions to the Upper Apennines. Not far away, in fact, lies the Corno alle Scale Regional Park, which offers hiking and mountain biking opportunities of varying difficulty.
In the picturesque village, the apse of the old church and the adjacent bell tower create a distinctive corner, giving a unique identity to the small village square. Of the old church, erected in 1393, only the apse survives, which features a Romanesque mullioned window at the rear with the date of construction engraved on it. Inside today's place of worship, successor to the old church, is an altarpiece by Antonio Crespi depicting "Jesus Handing the Keys to St. Peter" and a painting of the "Sacred Heart" by Cittadini.
Not far away is the striking oratory of San Rocco, characterized by a gabled structure, a bell gable and a portico with stone columns. This oratory was erected in 1631 as a sign of gratitude for the end of a plague epidemic by the local inhabitants.
In the charming little square of the Borgo Antico, accessed by four lowered vaults, gushes a small fountain with a 19th-century votive shrine behind it.
Vidiciatico, has changed over time, but in addition to the "voltoni" of Casa Gherardi, which remain as evidence of what the ancient village was like, here too it will be especially pleasing to tourists to encounter pleasant and well-organized town planning, hospitable services and premises.
There are various hypotheses about the origin of the name Vidiciatico: the best known has it that the name derives from the legend of a Modenese bandit, called Ciatico, who was wanted by the Bolognese government for his crimes. It is said that one day a local resident saw him at the place where Vidiciatico now stands; he went to the guards and said, "I saw Ciatico," and for this information he was rewarded.
