The Corno alle Scale massif, at 1945 meters above sea level, is the highest peak in the Bolognese Apennines. Environmentally, the rocky crags of the Corno represent a natural environment of rare beauty and integrity, where valuable botanical species find refuge, for many of which the Bolognese peak constitutes the southern European limit of flowering.
The area is embellished by two lakes, Cavone and Scaffaiolo. On the slopes of the Corno is the Laghetto del Cavone, a pleasant resting spot surrounded by beech woods; it is fed by the waters that collect in the glacial basin of the same name, and the small bumps that surround it are the moraine accumulations abandoned by the glacial tongue that descended to the Dardagna valley. Nearby is the Cavone refuge. Lake Scaffaiolo, on the other hand, is a small body of water at high altitude, the perfect arrival point for an evocative ridge hike. Since 1988 the entire area has become part of the Corno alle Scale Regional Park.
Along the slopes of the massif are the 40 kilometers of ski slopes that characterize the winter resort of the same name, all served by snowmaking facilities and excellent accommodation. The resort's great versatility allows for most winter sports. In addition to downhill and cross-country skiing, snowboarders can take advantage of a modern and challenging snowpark. And for those who prefer hiking, it is possible to immerse oneself in the unspoiled nature of the 5,000 hectares of the Corno alle Scale Park, using snowshoes or chair lift to have aperitifs and dinners in the mountain hut at high altitude without taking skis with them. There are also many services available at altitude, ski schools, rentals, excellent refuges and refreshments, parking.
The area is connected to Porretta Terme station by the regular bus service, making the area accessible by public transport as well.
