Alto Reno Terme

Porretta Terme

Alto Reno Terme is a municipality located in the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines on the Reno River valley. It is the merge of the two old towns of Porretta Terme and Granaglione.

On the border with Tuscany and with more than two thousand years of history, the "Porretta’s Thermal baths" represent the flagship of Apennine thermalism, which, in addition to wellness and health services, have diversified their offerings with cultural meetings and guided tours of the ancient springs, where water has been gushing out since the time of the Roman Empire.

Surrounded by lush forests and wild-looking mountains, Alto Reno is the starting point for several hikes through the chestnut forests and the vast beech groves. A number of long-distance hiking trails pass trought here and climb to the ridges of the Upper Bolognese Apennines until high-altitude grasslands, such as the Alta Via dei Parchi. The large trail network and steep slopes make Alto Reno one of the most enjoyable places for mountain bikers. Appenninica MTB Stage Race has several stages year by year, offering cyclists the most challenging and exciting trails in the Bolognese mountains!

There are many museums that preserve both the area's ancient mountain culture and more recent history. The Soul Music Museum is dedicated to the famous Porretta Soul Festival, with a tour that starts from the posters of the first editions, to the stage clothes donated by so many artists who have transformed the spa town into the European capital of soul music. In Porretta we find the Wood Museum, the Typographic Museum and the LabOrantes Museum, the latter located in the beautiful village of Castelluccio, inside the rooms of the Manservisi Castle. Of particular interest are the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Ponte in Porretta, now the Patron Saint of Basketball, where, inside, you will find the chapel of the Virgin Mary patron of basketball players; the Maria Maddalena Church and the Immacolata Church, where it is possible to visit one of the largest mechanical nativity scenes in the region. Of great importance is the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Faggio, founded around the 18th century following a Marian apparition under the large centuries-old beech tree.

In Granaglione you can visit the Calvigi Sanctuary. The building dates back to the 17th century and is one of the most evocative places in Alto Reno, where the typical sandstone mountain architecture blends with the beauty of the Apennine ridges.

Above all, Alto Reno is an area rich in historic villages with ancient origins. From Tresana to Lustrola - which recently turned 1,000 years old - to Capugnano and Madognana. In the Upper Reno Valley, along the banks of the Randaragna stream, we find some of the most enchanted and lesser-known hamlets: from Casa Calistri, passing by the ancient Biagioni bridge, to the inhabited area of Casa Pacchioni.
